James Wishart OAM (1925-2020)

Aug 31, 2020 | Obituaries, TAS

By Rodney Winwood

One of Tasmania’s finest and most respected rifle shooters, Mr James Wessing Wishart – B Sc, F.R.A.C.I., C Chem, OAM, passed away on the 21st July 2020.

James was born on the 3rd of July 1925, the only son of James and Charlotte Wishart.

James started shooting at a very young age with his father at the Sandford Rifle Range where he remained a member for all his shooting life.

Jim was the Captain of his club on many occasions and State council member and was also the President of the TRA and Life Member. In 1987 Jim was awarded Medal of the Order of Australia.

In 1976 Jim was an Australian Team member to Bisley, with his good friend Eric Thompson, they won the Empire Trophy, Kolapore Cup, Mackinnon (long range) Trophy, Dominion Prize.

In 1978 Jim was the Australian shooting Captain to Bisley. Jim was also a fine smallbore shooter with a large number of titles under his belt, but Jim’s love was his fullbore shooting.

He was a great supporter to all the younger shooters that entered the sport.

Most shooters will remember Jim at our Tasmanian Queen’s at Pontville at the presentations – Jim’s soft, warm and welcoming voice.

A well-mannered true gentleman who left his mark on our sport and will be remembered by all that knew him.

Jim was married for 68 years to Pat and father to Annette, Elizabeth and Robert.

R.I.P James.
