Ann Chinnery was a passionate and dedicated target rifle shooter which is not surprising as her connection to rifle shooting was family based. Originally from Whyalla (SA) she visited the local rifle range with her target shooting parents as a child. Eventually Ann joined the Whyalla Rifle Club as a member and later, when she and husband, Wayne, moved to Mackay around 2000, she joined one of the Mt Vince based clubs. She was a member of both the Mackay and Marian Rifle Clubs at different times. Ann and Wayne would travel all over Australia to compete in prize meetings and State Championships. She was a regular competitor and a familiar face at many rifle ranges and was a well known and respected competitor across Australia.
Ann represented Australia, South Australia and North Queensland in Ladies Teams. In 2004 Ann represented Australia in the touring Australian Ladies Team to New Zealand. She also represented the South Australia Rifle Association on four occasions between 1987 and 1998. After moving from South Australia to Mackay, Ann was selected in the NQRA’s Ladies Team. Ann competed for the NQRA Ladies Team on seven occasions between 2001 and 2018. Ann’s shooting prowess was recognised further with her selection in the NQRA’s Open State Team on ten occasions between 2001 and 2018.
The personal record Ann established was extensive and creditable. It includes three B Grade Queens wins and five B Grade Grand Aggregate wins.
B Grade Queen’s Prize wins were:
- 2009 QRA B Grade Queen’s
- 2017 SARA B Grade Queen’s, and
- 2021 NQRA B Grade Queen’s
B Grade Grand Aggregate successes included:
- 2009 QRA Grand Aggregate B Grade
- 2016 QRA Grand Aggregate B Grade
- 2017 NQRA Grand Aggregate B Grade
- 2018 VRA Grand Aggregate B Grade, and
- 2021 NQRA Grand Aggregate B Grade
Ann won four lead-up rifle competitions including:
- 2012 NQRA Stevens-Griffiths B Grade
- 2017 NQRA Wilson B Grade
- 2017 SARA Hunt B Grade, and
- 2021 NQRA Wilson B Grade
One of Anne’s most significant achievements occurred in 2017 when she won the B Grade NQRA Wilson Aggregate Trophy with the highest target rifle match aggregate score on the range thereby ensuring Ann’s name would be proudly displayed on the NQRA Wilson Aggregate Honour Board in perpetuity.
Ann was an MDTRA Co-Opted delegate to the NQRA Council during 2005, 2006 and 2007.
Ann Chinnery is sadly missed by Wayne and Nicole and by all members of the resident clubs at Mt. Vince Rifle Range at Walkerston, North Queensland. Ann will be missed by all who knew her but will certainly not be forgotten.
