1 July 2023 Update to SSR’s of the NRAA

Following direction from the Members Forum earlier in the year, the Board and members of the Rules, Safety and Technical Sub-Committee have reviewed two specific items in the SSR’s. These items were reviewed as a matter of importance, as highlighted by the States and Territory Associations, due to their significance in the continued improvement of our sport. Below are some accompanying comments to assist in further understanding the changes made and reflected in the updated SSR’s.

Changes to Chapter 3.4 – Approved Projectiles for TR and F Std

Given the current global issues with acquiring and securing components, the review of the approved projectile list was a necessary step. The changes effectively bring the NRAA into line with ICFRA rules on any projectile up to 156 grains in weight being approved for use for TR and F Std competition. Similarly, the requirement for purchasing of projectiles from S&T’s has been removed. The NRAA urges members to continue to purchase components from their S&T shops rather than independent retail outlets.

Additional descriptions to approved projectiles and cartridges have been added to Appendix 1 – relating to Chapter 3 including the addition of other classes/disciplines where there was limited description within the SSR’s previously.

Changes to Chapter 23 – Sporter Discipline

Following its inception, the rise in membership from and the inclusion of Sporter (Hunter) Discipline into regular competition over the past two years has seen the need to provide greater clarification around the Discipline. The first iteration of Chapter 23 provided some flexibility and interpretation however lacked some prescription in particular areas. The review and update to Chapter 23 provides clarification and standardisation across the Discipline.

The Discipline now provides for two classes, Production Class (PC) and Production Class Open (PCO). Production Class is designed for mass produced, commercially available for retail sale rifles such as (examples) Tikka, Remington, Howa, Lithgow, Savage and Weatherby. Production Class Open is designed for re-barrelled PC rifles and custom type rifles or rifles built for purpose utilising custom actions and barrel componentry. Examples may include a Defiance action with Maddco barrel or a Hardy Rifle along with the likes of Accuracy International rifles to name a few.

It is also recognized that the Discipline has transitioned from solely an introductory discipline to a competitive discipline in its own right. It was therefore imperative that greater description be provided thus ensuring standardized application to the Discipline in competitive instances.

A communique will soon be sent to S&T’s to assist RO’s in applying the rules from Chapter 23 where necessary.
