Preamble
Growing our membership and encouraging active club participation are key to the future of our sport. The Sporter classes (SPC/SPCO) offer a fantastic opportunity for clubs to engage new members—especially those who may already have experience with firearms through other organisations.
Sporter is an accessible and more affordable way for people to get involved in our sport. In fact, many participants choose to compete exclusively in these classes, without necessarily moving into other NRAA disciplines. With SPC/SPCO becoming more popular, the NRAA is excited to explore the development of a national competition pathway tailored to Sporter shooters.

Over the past three years, several State associations have seen strong growth in Sporter participation—and we’d love to see this momentum build across the country. Our goal is to support that growth with clearer rules, standalone competitions (similar to the King’s), and practical pathways that help clubs welcome and support new Sporter shooters.
Current Status
Participation in the Sporter class at State and National Championships has varied over the past few years. In some instances, numbers have been lower than expected, which has raised questions about how best to include the class in major events like the King’s Prizes. One factor may be that shooters must currently choose which class to enter, potentially limiting SPC/SPCO entries.
That said, there’s growing interest in the idea of hosting a dedicated competition focused solely on the Sporter classes. A great example is the Sporter Classic held by the Beaudesert Rifle Club in Queensland, which attracted more than 40 participants—showing what’s possible when the format fits the community.

We’ve also heard a range of feedback around rule interpretation, scrutineering, and inconsistencies across different events. These can pose challenges for organisers and competitors alike, and we’re keen to better understand how we might address them in collaboration with the community.
The NRAA has been engaging with the Sporter community over the past few years to help shape the direction of the discipline. Two versions of the Sporter rules have already been published, and a further draft is being prepared for consultation. We understand that the process has had its ups and downs, and we’re always open to learning and improving. Constructive, respectful dialogue remains essential—and by sharing ideas and working together, we believe there’s great potential to continue refining the Sporter format in ways that benefit the broader shooting community.

Looking Ahead
The NRAA sees real potential in Sporter as a vibrant and evolving discipline. With that in mind, here are some of the areas we’re currently looking into:
- Exploring the creation of a Sporter Advisory Committee that could help shape development, recruitment, and competition ideas, while also providing guidance to the Rules Committee.
- Continuing the review and refinement of the Sporter section in the Standard Shooting Rules (SSR), taking into account member feedback and changing needs.
- Considering the development of a broader strategy to support Sporter across all levels—from club and OPM events to State and National opportunities—alongside potential partnerships with industry to enhance the shooter experience.
We’ll soon be inviting Expressions of Interest from members who’d like to be part of the new Sporter Committee. Keep an eye on the NRAA website and Facebook page for the announcement—we’d love to have passionate and engaged members join us in shaping the future of Sporter!
