The National Rifle Association of Australia has completed a major update of the Standard Shooting Rules (SSR).

The revised rules take effect from 1 January 2026.

Two rule books will now operate together:

  • SSR V2.0 (1 Jan 26) – the primary rule book, including updated safety, conduct and competition provisions and the revised Sporter chapter.
  • SSR V8.0 (1 Jan 26) – a slim volume containing only those discipline chapters that have not yet been superseded by SSR V2.0.

How the two SSRs work together

From 1 January 2026:

  • All members, clubs and officials must follow SSR V2.0 for general safety, range conduct and competition requirements.
  • A small number of disciplines will continue to use their existing discipline-specific chapters in SSR V8.0 for match conditions, until new material is developed and approved.

Both documents clearly cross-reference each other, and an explainer is provided on the download page to help clubs and officials understand which sections apply.

What clubs and officials should do

  • Download SSR V2.0 and SSR V8.0 (1 Jan 26) from the NRAA website.
  • Ensure copies are available to Range Officers, club officials and competition organisers.
  • Familiarise yourself with the updated safety and conduct sections ahead of the 2026 competition season.

Next steps – Range Officer framework

In the first half of 2026, NRAA will work with States and Territories on:

  • A refreshed Range Officer Handbook aligned with the new SSR, and
  • A more accessible, digital RO accreditation and re-accreditation pathway, supported by online learning resources.

Further updates will be published as this work progresses.
